~~~ Happy 111th Heavenly Birthday, Dad, my mentor and Patriarch of the Donahue Family! It’s hard to believe you died 10 years younger than I am now, in 1976, at the age of 60, a month shy of your 61st Birthday. ~~~
From dropping out of school during the Great Depression at age 15 to serving almost 2 years in the FDR program of the CCC”s (Civilian Conservation Corps). Helping your dad and mom keep their house. Then, when your dad got sick, you helped him with this paint-and-paper-handling business. Then you enlisted in the Army before WWII and reached the rank of MP Sgt.
After the war worked long hours for PTC (Philadelphia Transit Company) when driving the El in February of 1958 having a stroke just before my second birthday. Then with Moms help struggling to survive what the doctors said was nothing short of miraculous.
After 8 months of rehabilitation, you helped Mom get a job with PTC. You became a stay-at-home dad while still dealing with the residual effects of your stroke, taking on the role of raising seven children, one of whom was a newborn, with Larry and me under the age of four.
I look at the picture in the kitchen of you holding Nancy as a baby just after you got home, and the overwhelmed look on your face, though evident now, was never shown to us kids. You and Mom both handled your new roles with admirable resolve and determination.
Happy Heavenly Birthday, Dad, who I know is smiling down on us and the legacy you and Mom built from the ground up!
