Well, being raised in and a product of the Catholic or Parochial School System, it was sort of drilled into you by our nuns and teachers. You were actually marked on things like… Cleanliness is next to Godliness, perseverance, etc., to keep in line with the Baltimore Catholic School Books issued!
I have to laugh, as this reminds me of a time when I was one of seven siblings- two girls and four boys in a row- and then our kid sister who came last. One year, I believe I was in third grade, and my older brothers were in 8th, 7th, and 5th grade, respectively. For Christmas, we all received a copy of The Emily Post book of Etiquette. Hey! Why just us and not the girls, when we’ve seen the piles of clothes in the corner of their rooms?
Anyhow, to stay on point, being groomed was a major expectation in our household. Baths every night; brush your teeth every morning and night; clean underwear, undershirts, and socks daily; comb your hair before school; and every Sunday or early Monday morning, shine your school shoes. The last thing our parents wanted to see or hear was the good Sr. or teacher telling us we needed to do better work in that field.
So, as you can see, this carried over into adulthood. The difference now, as a man in my seventies, is that grooming takes on a whole new level of man-scaping by keeping hair, beard, ears, sideburns, nose hair, etc., in check! LOL!
OK! Ladies, I am sure you have a much longer list than we gentlemen do, who won’t even ask you to share your escapades in self-care, grooming, and the like, as this page isn’t nearly long enough, nor is there enough time. We’ll just take your word for it and say Thank You!
