Like most kids in their youth, I wouldn’t eat many vegetables, meats, sides, and the like. We all have our favorite ice creams or water ice, and there are those we would never order or pass on if it were the only selection left. Some examples – peas, carrots, spinach, asparagus, beets, green beans, sauerkraut, and the dreaded to this day Lima beans (yuck! I still detest)

However, as I grew older, I learned to appreciate most of the foods mentioned above (not lima beans). The act isn’t so much that you disliked it as a kid, but that, as your taste developed, you tried it again. Like many of you, growing up in our house, most vegetables came out of a can. Compared with freshly bought and prepared vegetables, there’s a stark contrast in taste and consistency.

I remember a few years back at the Kennett Square Mushroom Festival trying mushroom and corn ice cream. I won’t be crazy about the mushroom, but the corn wasn’t too bad. You can’t say definitively you dislike or, God forbid, “Hate” something without at least trying it or giving it great consideration.

How many beer or wine drinkers can honestly say they liked their first sip of either? Don’t even get me started on buttermilk, though I hear some people actually enjoy it—maybe in my pancakes. I could create a long list of items from various food groups and condiments that would probably make both your and my list of foods to avoid, such as Gefilte fish, Haggis, Tripe, and Limburger Cheese, and the like, which means someone out there with really bad breath is buying and must be eating these things!

What are some of those things you love now that you hated as a kid?
