~~~ Happy 250th Anniversary as we head into this upcoming 4th of July! ~~~
I was a union guy out on work for a comp injury in the mid-1990s. An opportunity arose at that time to work in the corporate office as a Corporate Customer Service Representative.
I’d be working with our new food platter program and growing business with our holiday dinner offerings during Christmas and Easter, as well as Meat Shipping similar to the Omaha Steak Program. I accepted.
While there for a short time later, an opportunity presented itself to work with our lawyer, who, at the time, due to an out-of-the-area Corporate Headquarter move to Boise, Idaho, transitioned into his new role here as the “Director of Government Relations and Community Affairs”. He asked me if I would be interested in helping support him in one of his roles, sustaining corporate recognition by working with all nonprofit organizations, among other things. Once again, I challenged myself to follow my gut feeling and said, “yes”!
Some of this work I considered among my best memories in helping our store, through community work, thrive with nonprofits such as MDA, Variety, Ronald McDonald House, David Akers Kicks for Kids, fundraising for local fallen heroes (Police and Firemen), Susan B. Komen, Gift of Life, and more. The short of this story is that I ended up working there for almost 17 years, under six different presidents who went on to bigger and better roles in their future.
More importantly, I attended college but never finished my Business Administration degree because life happened. However, after working in our stores for 20 years before this opportunity arose, I often wondered whether I could not only make it but also thrive in the corporate world, and by saying yes, that question was fully answered for me.
It reminds me of a favorite poem by Robert Frost-“The Road Not Taken.” If you’re not familiar with it, I suggest you take a moment to look it up on your phone, iPad, or computer and read it.
Point to Ponder: You never know the when, The When, The How, The Why, and The Person behind a new opportunity in life that presents itself. The challenge is in knowing when to say “NO” and when to say “YES”. Ultimately, the decision is yours!
