Be thankful, grateful, patient, charitable, kind, and don’t forget to smile, as it is infectious. God Bless America and Protect Our President and Military
Many customs in this town, from Philly pretzels with water ice or a hot dog, to Bratwurst or sausage with a beer at the ballpark, with relish, sauerkraut, onions, and spicy mustard. In this town, it is as good as a Tastykake or Entenmann’s Danish with your cup of coffee, let’s be serious, any time of day. Cutting our Christmas Trees down for over 50 years at Bernards Tree Farm, or Halloween at Linville Orchards.
However, as I read this prompt, the first thing that came to mind is the Holiday Light show at Wanamaker’s with the old pipe organ. The Christkindle Market and Ice skaters in Dilworth Plaza at City Hall, or the Holiday Extravaganza at the Comcast Building. We always stopped at the Reading Terminal Market and got one of the most coveted of sandwiches in all of Philly, a Dinic’s hot roast pork with all the trimmings, with sweet or hot peppers, broccoli rabe, and sharp or mild provolone.
If the line’s too long, you really can’t go wrong with any of the food establishments inside. However, in a pinch, one of our grandkids’ favorite places is the Hard Rock Cafe right down the street towards City Hall. These are just some of the things from my childhood that we shared with our children and grandchildren, and I’m 70!
Notice I didn’t even mention the Constitution Center, Independence Hall, the Science or Rodin Museum, the Franklin Institute, the Please Touch Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Betsy Ross House, or Elfreths Alley, the oldest and most continuously inhabited street in our county. This city is on the verge of celebrating our nation’s 250th Anniversary, which started right here in our historical town.
However, this would be a perfect segue to pique your interest in my two published Philadelphia Holiday-related stories that highlight this amazing historical city, founded by William Penn, on the banks of the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. Highlighted below, they are both great reads any time of the year, but especially during the Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday season. Your family and friends will love them
They make great gifts as we celebrate our nation’s 250th Anniversary. Both are available on most online bookstores, in book, E*read, and on Audible as the Christmas story.
