It has its moments! I can’t even imagine spending Christmas holidays in warmer climates without the chance of seeing snow. Growing up without the opportunity to catch snowflakes on your tongue, build snow forts, have snowball fights with friends, sled, or ski means missing out on a whole host of winter activities.
Then there are the cozy moments by the fireplace or an outdoor fire pit with family and friends, drinks in hand—apple cider or hot cocoa with marshmallows, of course—while kids rummage through bars of chocolate and graham crackers to make s’mores.
All of this takes place during football season, alongside conversations about Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the excitement of Christmas, especially for children. The only thing absent is the scent of freshly fallen or burning leaves in the air, which would be easy to find since leaves are abundant everywhere.
Ah! With the colder weather, there are certainly things we enjoy. However, playing devil’s advocate, as we get older, the thought of raking leaves, bagging them, cleaning out gutters, putting away summer furniture, wrapping things up, and preparing snow equipment can make a strong case for wanting a warmer climate. This situation is akin to swapping heavy long coats for lighter jackets, long-sleeve shirts and pants for short tops and bathing suits, hand cream for sunscreen, and sneakers for boots. I understand that perspective as well.
Points to Ponder: In Pennsylvania, celebrating Christmas without the cold would be like trying to enjoy the fireworks of the Fourth of July in the snow. I can already picture the lawn chairs in the empty fields and parks—brr! For many parents, the return to school after a long summer break might be appealing. Perhaps you’d prefer trading spring flowers for the harvest of apples and pumpkins, along with the changing leaves and hot apple cider around a fire.
Sports fans are switching from baseball, soccer, and golf to football, basketball, and hockey. It’s a choice: cold hands and feet versus sunburned ones, winter clothing versus summer attire. So, when it comes to picking one season over the other or choosing hot over cold, it really isn’t a fair comparison!
