My best advice is to plan well in advance; not only the sites that come recommended but also research those off the beaten path finds, that are sometimes the most memorable.
Many you will find reside on the outskirts of town. Ask around family, friends, the Next-Door neighbor site; allow yourself the time to truly, kick the tires, as they say as you never know when or if you will ever get back.
