My wife and I love this British television series called The Repair Shop. I think it would be an American version of the famed series and business venture. The craftsmen and women would need to be of the character of their respective counter parts on the British series.
Everyone who benefits from the show’s technicians would be paid their worth, and the television station and its advertisers would cover the cost of restoring the item for all participants.
All craftsmen would be culled based on their ability to show the greatest respect, dignity, and compassion for each participant’s story, since their personal story and attachment to the item are the story.
The site, in the show is an old-thatched warehouse/barn amidst rolling farmland with livestock like chickens running around. which adds to the the draw of the show. A similar environment here in the states to replicate and capture the charisma and ambiance of the place. I picture a shop somewhere that meets the above criteria out in the country area of the Radnor Hunt Club or somewhere like it.
The show is presented by a furniture refinisher, Jay Blades in a part I would love to play. His job is to welcome the guests and find out more about their items, the stories and attachments behind each item presented. He then oversees the work that is done from start to finish. He gets the background from each crafts person was to what it will take to refurbish each item leading up to the and the ultimate presentation.
The shows cast are:
Will Kirk – Studied graphic design and antique furniture restoration and conservation.
Steve Fletcher – Has the most fascinating job of repairing clocks, which is known as a horologist. Something he learned from his father who also was an horologist. He convinced and persuaded his sister, Suzie Fletcher, to join the show following the very sad death of her husband. Her forte’ is leather work and refinishing especially, with equestrian equipment.
Kirsten Ramsay – She’s the resident ceramic expert and can repair the most fragile of cracks. She learned her craft at West Dean College and later worked at the conservation department at the British Museum in London.
Dominic Chinea – He is a graphic designer that specializes in design and car restoration, drawing, in on his construction and problem-solving skills.
Amanda Middleditch and Julie Ratchell – They specialized in repairing bears, doll, stuffed animals and toys and the clothes they wear from that time period. The pair own their own bear restoration business called, Bear It In Mind. They also host their own podcast.
Lucia Scalisi – She restores art and canvases, bringing damaged or neglected works back to life. She has worked as a Senior Conservator of Paintings at the V&A Museum and as Chief Restorer at the Calcutta Tercentenary Trust in India.
Brenton West – He has over 40 years of silversmithing and helps with anyone’s silver needs. He also has a huge passion for photography too!
Sonnaz Nooranvary – She is the shows upholsterer and breathe new life into furniture pieces presented. She has been with the show from its launch in 2017 and is of British Iranian heritage from Dorset., where she decided to pursue upholstery after quitting her law degree at teh university.
Other Show Guest Craftsmen are Stephen Kember, who repairs music boxes. Pete Woods, is a musical instrument expert who primarily handles woodwinds, brass, bagpipes, and percussion instruments. Julyan Wallis, (also known as the guitar doctor) is the guest, Luthier. He’s called whenever a stringed or fretted instrument like a guitar, banjo, or mandolin needs repair.
