Elon Musk and his SpaceX surely have their eyes set on that happening. It will probably be an artificial magnetic dome, impregnable to external forces, that can withstand and/or deflect incoming space debris. It will also sustain atmospheric conditions, creating an artificial, renewable source by collecting condensation in large silos that support all manner of life.
Making Mars suitable for living, growing crops, loaded with green energy for power, trees, shrubs, and plants for creating oxygen and cleaning the air of carbon dioxide, some sort of condensation water collecting feature on each livable space that supports growing food, especially those used in cooking, making medicines, and supporting life as we know it.
My reality is I hope we don’t go there unless absolutely necessary for survival, for the simple reason that, like space itself, we will junk it up! Look at our past history with space junk now, ruining the rainforest, pollution, smog, crime, murder, greed, and garbage. I think we should focus on cleaning up our planet first, and from the looks of things, just watching a week or even a day’s worth of daily news, it’s going to take a long, long time.
The only redeeming thing is if they develop the technology to do it, I won’t be here to see it, and with robotics and AI tech, it won’t be long before they don’t need us. We have all seen or at least heard of the movie The Terminator or I, Robot.
