Work in a carpentry shop that makes handcrafted furniture. I used to fill my Study Halls with Wood Shop classes throughout High School. Then, applying your learned knowledge of the tools such as the uses for a band saw, press drill, lathe, router, planer, buzz saw, jigsaw, vices, wood glue, wood dowels, and calipers, e.g., to make tables, dovetailing, use of dowels over screws or nails, in chairs, benches, tables, or other using your imagination and skills set.
Wood selection for your project, such as cherry, beryl, walnut, oak, maple, knotty pine, chestnut, black walnut, ash, and the like. After the finishing stages of sanding, routing, and rounding edges and corners, or lathing table legs, bowls with a host of different-sized cutting and rounding tools and calipers in the process. Taking a square piece of wood to create things that will fit in a round hole. Each tool in the shop serves a different purpose.
Then heading to the Staining/varnishing room, learning the different uses of rags or brushes for the best finishes with tung oil, shellacs, varnishes, urethanes, and stains in multiple colors. Taking what was once a tree standing tall in the woods, which was culled, and then using it to create something that tells a story in its continued history.
Yeah, this would be a job I’d like to do for a day, a week, a year, or until your imagination runs out of options or your hands wither and callous to the point of no longer performing.
