AI Technology has been around for the better part of my life, if not in comic books and the old movies of past generations. Think Lost in Space.
However, it wasn’t until the growth of supercomputers that they exceeded most folks’ expectations in cognitive abilities, surpassing humans now, which has everyone trying to slow the pace for a more controlled, practical-use approach.
Many, including myself, think they are creating without the proper checks and balances in performance and applications. The latest AI centers opening across America to compete with China and other countries seem to be all the rage. The powers that be are only looking at it for advances, the stock market, and money to be made, which, to be honest, is never good. They’re only looking at the variables of new jobs being created while overlooking the fact that AI has already replaced jobs.
The fear now among the average Joes and Jane is that we have opened Pandora’s box; how long will our new robotic androids see the purpose of keeping folks around? Especially those who, throughout history, couldn’t get along and were hell-bent on safeguarding themselves by building bigger and better war machines to kill each other. We all know how that script ends, and we never really needed Hollywood to lay it out for us in feature films.
I don’t think even the likes of James Bond or Austin Powers will be able to stop the forces of SPECTRE or Doctor Evil in their plan to destroy us all while we sit back, frightened or eating popcorn, as it all goes down. Well, that’s my take, and my fear as a 70+ year old isn’t so much for myself as for our children and grandchildren.
It’s like inventing an airplane without an all-important ejector roof and seats that become a parachute, with a seat that serves as a flotation device. I might add it has a built-in heater, location device, and is lined with anti-shark repellent. Just saying! I bet Elon Musk would have thought of this??
