A few of my favorite books and stories come to mind, and they go as follows, with their iconic endings:
Ebenezer Scrooge (A Christmas Carol): The cruel, misanthropic, and extremely greedy character, with his apathy towards the less fortunate, is loathed by one and all in this timeless classic. He embodies all the traits of one whom society loathes. His hope lies in his clerk, Bob Cratchit, his nephew, Fred, and a spiritual visit from his old business partner, Jacob Marley. Jacob warns him that unless he accepts the chance to be visited and redeemed by the three Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, and changes his ways, he, too, will be eternally damned.
Darth Vader turns against Emperor Palpatine in the Return of the Jedi trilogy to save his son, Luke Skywalker.
Gollum in the LOFT, who played a twisted antagonist obsessed with the “One Ring,” actually ends up saving Middle-earth from Frodo, who was having second thoughts. By falling into the fires of Mount Doom destroys Sauron’s power.
The T-800 (Terminator 2: Judgment Day): Arnold Schwarzenegger’s relentless, unstoppable cyborg from the 1984 original returns in the sequel. He is completely reprogrammed and becomes the protector of young John Connor, sacrificing himself to prevent the rise of Skynet
Doctor Octopus (Spider-Man 2): Doctor Otto Octavius is driven mad by his mechanical arms and creates a dangerous doomsday machine. He regains control of his mind and remembers his original nobler goals and drowns the machine at the cost of his own life to save New York City.
Severus Snape (Harry Potter Series): Portrayed as a cruel, antagonistic force throughout, until the very end. However, Snape’s ultimate allegiance to Dumbledore is revealed at the end. His entire life’s work becomes a mission to save Harry Potter from Lord Voldemort.
The Grinch (How the Grinch Stole Christmas): Starting out as a bitter outcast who actively tries to ruin Christmas for Whoville, his heart famously grows “Three Sizes”. He brings back all the stolen presents and embraces the spirit of the Christmas Holiday.
Loki (Marvel Cinematic Universe): The primary antagonist of the Avengers and Thor, he undergoes a massive transformation throughout the franchise. He eventually sacrifices his life trying to stop Thanos to protect his brother, cementing his status as a favorite antihero.
