Daily Prompt: Do you believe in fate/destiny? 2/27/96

Be thankful, be grateful, be patient, be charitable, be kind, and don’t forget to smile, as it is infectious.

In my younger years, I didn’t give it much thought. I felt that people carved out their own fate. However, looking back over our fifty years of marriage, I’m almost certain that God or fate—whatever you want to call it—played a role in our destiny. The odds of two sixteen-year-olds in the mid-1970s meeting and marrying before turning twenty certainly weren’t the norm.

We felt fortunate in that moment, recognizing in each other that there was something more than just a desire for a causal relationship. It is rare for the brass ring to present itself early in the carousel ride of life. It’s even more unusual to catch it on the first pass before it vanishes, and the ride is over.

We just celebrated 50 years of marriage. We are still enjoying the ride together. Like any long ride, there have been people who rode with us for a time, some who got off, new ones got on along the way, but we loved them all and cherished the time we had together. We are still blessed to continue to ride on in our little corner of the world. With its ups and downs, we are content in the understanding that they are all just part of the ride—and what a ride it has been!
