Prompt: What book are you reading right now? 11/8/25

Have a great day! Live this Saturday with the joy as a kid in middle school running out the door to meet up with your friends, free with no homework!

My wife purchased in piecemeal a series of books, which my wife picked up the first one, the week our pool closed for the year, by Patrick Taylor called An Irish Country Doctor. The author is an M.D. and was raised in Bangor, County Down, in Northern Ireland. I believe there are 13 books in the series, of which we have found 8 so far at used bookstores. The thing is, we can’t fathom why PBS, BritBox, or some other station hasn’t picked up this Patrick Taylor series and produced it as a made-for-television program.

It is an easy read, featuring the main characters: Dr. Fingal-Flahertie O’Reilly, Dr. Barry Laverty, his young intern, their housekeeper, Kinky Kincaid, their love interest, and the townsfolk who live in and around the fictional small community of Balleybuckleboo. A community where everyone knows everyone and their business, which is steeped in the Irish language, ways, and its history.

We are both in the midst of reading 5 of the books of the series, but in a willy-nilly fashion, which doesn’t seem to make much difference, given how the books are referenced in their telling.

I just finished an Irish Country Village, which my wife just started. I am now reading the 10th book in the series, An Irish Doctor in Peace and War

So, if you enjoyed a series on PBS called All Creatures Great and Small, Derry Girls, or The Luck of the Irish, you will want these reads. I just read that they are available on CD or Digital Download. Go Figure!
