Prompt: What would you do if you lost all your possessions? 9/29/25

Good Morning, have a great day!

I don’t know why, but it has been instilled in me as far back as I can remember, from the youngest age, that possessions are only self-indulgent pleasures in life. We shouldn’t get too attached, as they are only temporarily living in the recesses of our memories. However, if we are being honest, it is usually more about the attachment to the person(s) or places of our past that carry much more weight than the objects themselves.

The most essential possessions in our lives are those we are attached to on a personal level through love, relationship, or friendship. The tangible things include grandparents, parents, siblings, spouses, children, grandchildren, and so on. It would be pretty shallow of us to worry more about the intangibles of a cherished antique, heirloom, money, and the like. We have been warned through many passages of both the Old and New Testaments, as well as various religious beliefs and writings, of the dangers of living a life so self-absorbed.

The above has been a topic of discussion for over a millennium, inspiring poetry, books, movies, and numerous media outlets of the day, from Hieroglyphics, Sanskrit, Homer, Ovid, Shakespeare, and Anderson, to the more profound teachings of the prophets, especially those of Jesus and his disciples. It has always been a matter of belief, and since Adam and Eve, a choice between good and evil, right and wrong. To end on a humorous note, consider the movie “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly,” which has been played out since the beginning of time. Like Solomon, we just need the wisdom to know the difference.
