The art of making the perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a timeless staple, both then and now. I prefer creamy peanut butter from brands like Peter Pan, Jif, or Skippy, as I’m not a fan of chunky varieties. While store-brand jelly or jam works in a pinch, my favorites are Welch’s, Smucker’s, or Bonne Maman. I lean towards jam rather than jelly, with grape and strawberry preserves being my top picks over other options.
I’m also quite particular about the bread. As kids, the choices in our house mainly were store-brand bread, Wonder, or Bond, basically whatever was on sale and the cheapest. Brands like Pepperidge Farm and Arnold were too expensive for a family with a bunch of kids. However, when Stroehmann entered the market, it was a game-changer. Nowadays, everyone loves Maier’s Italian Bread, whether it’s seeded or unseeded. Hopefully, you weren’t diagnosed with a gluten allergy in midlife, but if you were, my recommendation is Scharr’s Artisan White or Multigrain.
