My first crush, where I started to connect with my masculinity, was in second grade, and it was on my teacher, Miss Dunn. I should also mention my third-grade teacher, Miss Fidaley. Attending a Catholic grade school, especially with its emphasis on religious education from the Baltimore Catechism, made me feel like I was destined for a lifetime of penance. I’m just being honest, under the belief of the commandment of, “Thou shalt not lie or bear false witness.”
I was an energetic and impressionable child, growing up with two older brothers and two older sisters. Most of my friends were several years older than I was, and they were all quite similar in nature. In my defense, I learned early on the cardinal rule: do not kiss and tell. To their credit, both of my educators were beautiful women and excellent teachers, which added to their charm. This experience was particularly influenced by my most significant mentor in elementary school, Sister Mary Anthony of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM Order), from whom I never felt any romantic attraction.
