My Best Friend, Confidant, Life and Wife…

Daily writing prompt
Share a story about someone who had a positive impact on your life.

It’s rare to meet someone at a young age, like sixteen, and almost instantly realize that this is the person you want to walk through life with and share everything. To be honest, it was a bit scary! However, I was fortunate to recognize her as a blessing. I only had a brief moment to reach out and grasp the brass ring on life’s merry-go-round. What a ride it has been over the past 53 years, and soon we will celebrate 50 years together. I might add that she hasn’t smothered me yet—LOL!

Back then, we shared picnics in the park, took day trips to the shore, attended proms, and introduced each other to our families. We longed for more and cherished the moments that led us to deeper conversations about exploring each other’s minds, bodies, and souls, as well as our expectations. Though we were both just 19, we felt that, as a couple, we were ready to become one!

It has been a journey that I would gladly repeat over and over again. We fit together perfectly, like a pair of gloves, shoes, peanut butter and jelly, bacon and eggs—like yin and yang, like X’s and O’s. We are woven into each other’s DNA, having withstood the test of time. We’ve faced everything life has thrown our way, navigating through jobs, children, moves, sickness, health, joy, sadness, and the ups and downs of life and death. Yet, we continue to function as one kindred spirit.

Happy Mother’s Day to my wife, mother, and grandmother, whom I love more than anything in the world. They have all been amazing, and as I often tell anyone who asks, I am the luckiest man alive! I share this feeling with every couple who takes their vows and lives by them. I wish all of you the best in finding your other sock, shoe, or glove. And when love presents itself, embrace it wholeheartedly, and dance through life together—laughing even when you accidentally step on each other’s toes.
